Overview
The Department of Paediatrics provides care for infants, children, and adolescents. Patients come to us for routine health checks as well as for illnesses that require treatment or follow-up. As the best college for paediatrics courses in Perambalur, we give students exposure to care across all paediatric age groups, from newborns to teenagers. Some visits are brief, while others involve admission or longer observation, allowing students to understand how growth and development are monitored over time in everyday clinical practice.
How paediatrics supports clinical learning
Paediatrics introduces students to clinical work in a different way. Children are not always able to describe their symptoms clearly, and much of the assessment depends on observation, history from caregivers, and careful examination.

Clinical exposure and training
Clinical exposure in paediatrics is based on regular interaction with children and their families.
Students spend time in:
- Outpatient clinics
- Inpatient wards
- Neonatal and paediatric intensive care areas
- Ward rounds and case discussions
They observe how children are examined, how parents are counselled, and how treatment plans are adjusted based on age and development. With time, students become familiar with common childhood illnesses and the flow of paediatric care. All exposure takes place under supervision.

Immunisation clinics function on all Wednesdays, with vaccinations given as per the EPI schedule.

Ethical and professional practice
Paediatric care involves children and families, which requires a sensitive approach. Attention is given to consent, explanation, and comfort during examinations and procedures.
Students are guided on appropriate behaviour when interacting with children and caregivers. Privacy and confidentiality are treated as part of everyday clinical work. Student involvement is supervised and kept within defined limits.
Faculty and student guidance
Clinical work in the department is handled by faculty who are part of day-to-day paediatric care. Students are guided during clinics, ward rounds, and routine discussions.
Questions usually come up while children are being seen and are dealt with at that time. A lot of learning happens by watching how cases are managed, listening to conversations, and talking things through rather than through formal sessions.
Our Approach
Paediatrics moves at its own pace. Children do not always respond in the same way as adults, and improvement can take time.
