Pharmacovigilance Committee

Pharmacovigilance refers to the science and activities related to the detection, assessment, understanding, and prevention of adverse drug reactions and other drug-related problems. At Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital, the Pharmacovigilance Committee functions to promote patient safety and rational use of medicines, in alignment with pharmacovigilance committee medical college.The committee operates in accordance with the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI), a national initiative under the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), coordinated by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), Ghaziabad.

Purpose and Regulatory Mandate

As per the regulations of the Medical Council of India and the National Medical Commission, it is mandatory for every medical college to constitute a Pharmacovigilance Committee. The committee is responsible for monitoring, evaluating, and reporting adverse drug reactions occurring in patients receiving care at the institution, thereby contributing to PvPI adverse drug reaction reporting.

Goals and Objectives

The key objectives of the Pharmacovigilance Committee are to:

• Create awareness about adverse drug reactions among healthcare professionals and students
• Identify, document, and report ADRs to appropriate national authorities
• Perform causality assessment of reported ADRs
• Undertake pharmacovigilance-related research activities
• Strengthen participation in the National Pharmacovigilance Programme

These activities support improved patient outcomes and drug safety monitoring in hospitals.

Scope and Functions

The committee plans, implements, and monitors pharmacovigilance activities across the institution and meets periodically (once every two to three months). Its functions include regular visits to OPD and IPD areas, ensuring availability of ADR reporting forms, collecting complete ADR data, performing expert evaluation, and forwarding validated reports to PvPI, ensuring an effective institutional pharmacovigilance programme.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Chairman and Coordinator oversee committee functioning and administrative activities. Members function as subject experts and facilitators by sensitising healthcare staff, educating patients, collecting ADR data, conducting causality assessments, and ensuring timely submission of reports to national authorities, strengthening the ADR reporting system hospital.
