Gender Harassment Committee
Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital is committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all students, faculty, staff, patients, and visitors. The Gender Harassment Committee (GHC) has been constituted to prevent, prohibit, and address all forms of gender-based harassment, ensuring dignity, equality, and mutual respect across the campus and workplace in accordance with the gender harassment policy of the medical colleges.
Purpose of the Committee
The primary objectives of the Gender Harassment Committee are to promote gender sensitivity and awareness within the institution; prevent all forms of gender-based harassment; provide a fair, confidential, and timely mechanism for addressing complaints; ensure a work and learning environment free from discrimination and intimidation; and uphold institutional policies and applicable legal provisions, including those prescribed under Vishaka guidelines sexual harassment.
Scope and Coverage
The scope of the Gender Harassment Committee extends to complaints related to gender harassment, including sexual harassment, discrimination, bullying, and any unwelcome conduct that violates personal dignity or creates a hostile environment. The committee’s jurisdiction covers academic, clinical, administrative, and residential areas, including hospital premises, hostels, and institutional events conducted on or off campus, ensuring comprehensive workplace harassment prevention.
Roles and Responsibilities
The committee is responsible for receiving and reviewing complaints related to gender harassment and conducting impartial inquiries in accordance with established procedures and principles of natural justice. It recommends appropriate corrective or punitive action where necessary, ensures protection against retaliation, and undertakes preventive initiatives such as awareness programmes, workshops, and training sessions to promote professionalism and respectful conduct in line with internal complaints committee functions.
Complaint Redressal Mechanism
A transparent and accessible complaint redressal mechanism is provided to all members of the institution. A complaint of discrimination or sexual harassment may be lodged by the aggrieved person or by a third party on their behalf, in writing, and addressed to the Chairperson or Member Secretary of the Committee. All complaints are handled with strict confidentiality, sensitivity, and adherence to due process, ensuring fairness under the sexual harassment complaint procedure.
Sexual harassment, as defined by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, includes but is not limited to:
- Physical contact and advances
- Demand or request for sexual favours
- Sexually coloured remarks
- Showing pornography
- Any other unwelcome physical, verbal, or non-verbal conduct of a sexual nature
The following behaviours are also considered sexual harassment:
- Eve-teasing, unsavoury remarks, or sexist jokes
- Gender-based insults or taunts
- Unwelcome sexual overtones, including telephonic or electronic communication
- Touching, brushing against the body, or physical confinement
- Display of offensive or derogatory material
- Any act likely to violate personal dignity or privacy
Awareness and Prevention
The Gender Harassment Committee actively promotes gender equity through regular sensitisation programmes, dissemination of institutional policies, and engagement activities. By encouraging awareness and open dialogue, the committee works towards preventing harassment and fostering a supportive and inclusive institutional environment grounded in gender sensitisation in medical colleges.
