Overview
The Department of Biochemistry handles pre-clinical teaching related to laboratory based understanding of body processes. This is where students begin working with biochemical concepts through practical work, tests and observations that are commonly used in medical settings.
For many students, this is their first exposure to laboratory oriented learning in medicine. Much of the work here involves understanding results, processes and basic interpretations rather than learning theory alone. How learning happens here
Biochemistry learning happens mainly through laboratory sessions.
Students perform practicals, handle samples, and work with instruments used for routine experiments. Results are discussed during sessions, and experiments are repeated when required so that students become familiar with procedures and outcomes.

The Department of Biochemistry is located on the first floor of the academic building. Teaching and laboratory activities are carried out within the department, while service related work functions from the hospital side. The department includes the following laboratory spaces:
- Practical laboratory
Used for routine undergraduate practical sessions. Students carry out prescribed experiments and learn basic laboratory techniques as part of the pre-clinical curriculum. - Research laboratory

The department also operates a service laboratory within the hospital. This laboratory functions round the clock as part of the hospital’s central laboratory services, along with other service labs. It supports routine diagnostic testing and works independently of teaching practicals.
All laboratories are equipped with the instruments required for regular practical work and experiments conducted during the course.
Ethical and professional practice
Laboratory work in the Department of Biochemistry follows accepted academic and ethical practices. Students are informed about appropriate conduct before and during laboratory sessions. This includes how laboratory spaces are used, how samples and materials are handled, and how instruments are operated during practical work.
Experiments are carried out only as part of teaching and academic activity, and always under supervision. Access to laboratories is controlled during practical sessions, and work is expected to follow departmental instructions. These practices are treated as part of regular training and are reinforced throughout the course rather than addressed only once.
