Overview
The Department of Physiology supports pre-clinical teaching by helping students understand how the human body functions under normal conditions. Learning here focuses on how different systems work, respond, and maintain balance.
Students are introduced to physiology through practical work and demonstrations, alongside theory, so that concepts are seen and not only read about. This approach supports our role as a college for Physiology Courses in Perambalur.
Teaching in the department includes:
- Laboratory-based experiments
- Demonstrations using instruments
- Observation of physiological responses
- Discussion of results during practical sessions
These sessions help students understand function in a practical context and prepare them for later clinical learning.
What we offer
The department is located on the third floor of the academic building and includes several laboratories used for teaching and research.
- Hematology laboratory
Used for the study of blood. The lab is equipped with microscopes and other instruments required for routine hematology practicals. - Amphibian laboratory
Used to demonstrate muscle contraction and related physiological studies. Teaching is supported by kymographs and allied instruments, commonly using frog preparations. - Mammalian laboratory
Used for studying organ function through experimental work. The lab is equipped with isolated organ baths, high-speed kymographs, and related instruments. These facilities support both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. - Clinical physiology laboratory
Used to study physiological responses in humans. The lab includes ECG machines, spirometers, BMR instruments, bicycle ergometers, and other related equipment. - Research laboratory
Used for research work and advanced recording. Equipment includes single- and multi-channel physiographs, polygraph systems, gas analyzers, pH meters, incubators, calorimeters, and instruments for recording passive movements.

Ethical conduct in experimental work
Practical teaching in physiology follows accepted ethical guidelines. Students are guided on appropriate conduct during laboratory sessions, and experimental work is carried out under supervision. Experiments are used only for teaching and academic purposes.

Physiology concepts learnt during the pre-clinical phase come back during clinical training. Observations made during experiments help students make sense of clinical signs, investigations, and responses seen later in patient care.

Topics are revisited as needed, and teaching moves at a steady pace.
